►   MALTESE - AN OFFICIAL EUROPEAN LANGUAGE

It is to be noted that the Maltese Language has been admitted as a European Language by the Commission of the EUROPEAN UNION. This is because Malta, as a country considered viable for accession to the EU is deemed to have its own unique language. Thus all EU legislation, official correspondence and other documentation is to be translated into Maltese as well as into the Languages of all EU-acceding Countries, this is additional to the already-existing translation services regarding the existing Full Member countries. Apart from the European Commission 'in-house' translation Services, EU countries are served by the SdT (Service de Traduction) Centre in Brussels. The Centre has some 250 in-house employees but also relies on outside contractors (Freelance Translators) to satisfy its huge workload.

In 2002 SdT translated 1.3 million typewritten pages. Of these, some 270,000 pages were translated by outside free-lancers. StD regularly receives requests for translation from all sectors of the EU administration. The Commission, Parliament, the Social & Development Committee, the Court of Justice, and other EU institutions. Whereas English, French and German remain the core language, representing some 80% of all language used by the EU, it has been recently decided by the EU commission not to deprive the citizens of the many new and other existing countries in the EU from full understanding of the European Union and its available information and operations through language barriers. This means that roughly as from April 2003 the appropriate EU institution/section will be issuing several calls for Tenders for qualified TRANSLATORS to participate as Freelance Translators in the massive task of translating the several items that need translating into the several languages concerned.

  ►   CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Persons who are proficient in at least three (3)  languages including their mother-tongue and hold a Degree in any discipline are invited to submit their candidacy for selection as freelance translator/s in a 'Co-operative pool of linguists' that is being set up by Dr J R Pace & Partners, in readiness for the issue of tenders by the European Union. The content-range of translation material is very vast, ranging from legal to political, to social, medical, scientific or governmental.

The translator's pool will be operated and managed from Malta. Applicants from Malta, Gozo, and other Countries who are computer-literate and have direct private access to a computer and hold an email address may apply.
